Très répandu dans toute la moitié nord de l'Italie, notamment en Toscane, également très présent en Corse et dans le Sud-Est (06, 13), le nom était souvent donné à des enfants trouvés (innocente était un terme désignant en Toscane un enfant trouvé). A noter cependant que le nom Innocente a été porté par divers saints et papes, et qu'il peut aussi évoquer la fête des Saint Innocents. Le singulier Innocente est beaucoup plus rare (Pouilles, Vénétie, Frioul). Variante corse : Innocenzi. Diminutif : Innocentini. La forme Innocent, portée dans le Nord et la Seine-Maritime, semble surtout avoir été un prénom.
